“The Mask”

There’s nothing bad
Nor sinister
Watching people’s lives unfold
Without their ability to watch yours.

After all, there is no strength in that
It’s weakness; shame speaking
You don’t want transparency;
Nakedness.
You won’t judge others
But fear they’ll judge you,
Maybe they do.

You’d like to help those you see
That could use yours
But, you can’t.
What if they see through you first
Reject your support
Betray your faith in them?

A mask has eyes to see
While hiding your identity
So you can give without judgement
Or criticism
It’s taken on face value
Only,
Without the face.

A phantom  life is prison
Yearning to reveal
His true nature,
His soul.

I bet its torture
It served a genuine purpose once
Albeit, unwanted
Yet, grown accustomed to.

The unseen scars are real;
And many
From multiple sources
They form halls of shame….
Walls of shame
..Of flame
..Of blame.

If only we could know
What lies behind the mask….

But, I don’t think it’s bad;
Nor sinister
It’s just a shame…
….just a damned shame.
