A Poem About Midlife Strife-“Mirror Mirror”

I can’t believe it’s you I’m really looking at
staring back at me.
I keep looking with a quizzical expression
thinking the picture will change…
Who am I?

I see the wrinkles,
the loosening skin,
the creases around my mouth.
When did these changes begin…
Where was I?

I must not have taken a good look
in recent years
I wish I had.
It would be a lot easier now
to see
who I am.

There is aging from within.
I see it through my eyes.
I can see the journey to here
looking deep inside
I know where I am.

I need to look away now
to look at the paths
to choose from,
then look again
back at me….
long and hard
Then ask…

Who am I?
What am I?
Where am I?
Is this really you
I want to see
Looking back at me?”

  1. On some level, I can certainly relate to all of the poems here on this blog. They all touch a piece of my soul. The Cherios poem touches the “mother” in me and the deep love I have for my own children. The poem on Midlife Strife; that poem has one not only thinking of the changes taking place on the outside but also the changes that have and are occurring on the inside. In this poem she asks a few questions that I am sure we all have asked at some point; I know I have esp. who am I? My answer, I am who I am now but know I am always in transformation..cause life is just that and Peg’s poems all point to that. Life is a series of events that impact us on all levels. Hopefully, we learn and grow from such experiences. I believe Peg’s poems takes us on her journey but through the depth of honesty and vulnerabilty she opens the door for us to look in our own mirror. What an awesome gift she has given us in her poetry and what courage to share them. Thank you Peg!
