“The Most Precious Thing” – A Poem by Sid Spano- Happy Birthday Dad! I Love You!

My son was made a bishop
And he came to visit one day,
I want to show you my ring, he said,
If I may.

Did you ever see anything,
As precious as this Holy thing?
But Momma then extended her hand,
And showed me a more precious band,
Her wedding ring.

But Momma, how can that be?
For it took many years for me.
In the seminary, as you know,
I was as busy as could be.
There was the study that kept me
Awake at night, and it tired me so.
And many times till morn’s early light.

And then on that most eventful day,
When I heard that great oration,
The bishop said you are a priest forever my son,
It was my day of ordination.

And many years later from church to church I went,
Until from heaven, a letter was sent.
You are to become a Bishop, it said,
I couldn’t believe what I read.
It was then this ring was placed
To be forever and ever embraced.

This of ring of mine, she said
Is more precious than thine.
And though yours be ever so fine,
It cannot compare to mine.

Son, she said,
I bore you so long and hard,
The pain I could hardly bare.
But thru God’s loving Grace, you arrived here.
I nursed you each and every day
And saw you grow so very strong.
And there were times that went so terribly wrong.
For many a tear I shed for you
As you moaned in pain
When tears came down as rain,
The whole night through.

I saw you grow and mature each day,
When God called you to the altar that May.
I was so proud of you that I wanted to rise and sing,
On that glorious morn when you received your ring.

But let me tell you one important thing,
There is nothing on earth
As precious as this wedding ring.
For it is a gift from God to us both,
That bound us together on the day of your birth.
